Remember the “Smoothie” craze?  There were smoothie shops popping up everywhere, books devoted to nothing but smoothie recipes (now that is an easy cookbook to write!), and you could even buy a special smoothie making blender with a smoothie-dispensing spout.

Flash-forward a few years-- our local smoothie shops sits empty and those fancy smoothie makers are now a yard sale staple.  While the smoothie may no longer be king we think smoothies still deserve respect.  Smoothies are an easy way to get a lot of quality nutrition in a quick, easy and inexpensive package.

At Cleanse Organic, we love smoothies.  They are an integral part of our 28-day whole foods based cleansing program.  Here are some of our tips for making the perfect smoothie:

  1. Start with a Powerful Protein:It’s the protein in your smoothie that makes it more of a meal and less of a drink.  This is especially important at breakfast.  Studies show eating enough protein in the morning can help you feel more satisfied and eat fewer calories throughout the day.  We love Living Harvest Hemp Protein Powder.  It’s a whole food source of protein which makes it more nutritious compared to other protein powders made from protein isolates.  Plus, the protein in hemp is very digestible and hypo-allergenic, making it a perfect choice for our cleansers.
  2. Choose your Liquid:There’s a wide variety of choices for smoothie liquids.  If you like creamy smoothies, use milk as your base, either dairy or non-dairy.  If you prefer thinner smoothies and you like fruit, a fruit juice might be right for you.
  3. Use Frozen Fruit:  Frozen fruit will thicken your smoothie and make it cold without the wateriness that comes from using ice cubes.  Either buy frozen fruit or freeze your own. Chop fruit into pieces before freezing and freeze in individual portions so you don’t end up with one big frozen fruit mass.
  4. Choose Some Healthy Additions:  Smoothies are an easy, tasty way to get super foods into your diet.  My favorite healthy addition to my morning smoothie is a greens powder.  Some other great choices are flaxseed, bee pollen, nutritional yeast, chia seeds, even kale!

Here is my perfect smoothie recipe that I drink for breakfast practically every morning.  It is simple and delicious.

4 Tablespoons Living Harvest Hemp Protein Powder
1 ½ cups coconut milk
1 frozen banana
1 Tablespoon greens powder

Blend all ingredients in a high-powdered blender until creamy.

How about you?  What is your perfect smoothie recipe?  Post your response by Thursday June 23rd and you will be entered to win a free cleanse (a $395 value)! Be sure to leave your email address so we can contact you when you win!
