Allergies can get in your way, or out of your way, when it comes to having summer fun. I chose the later a few years ago when I discovered I had food and environmental allergies.

I knew I had to get creative. My husband and I are avid cyclists. We enjoy touring. We leave our car behind and carry all of our gear on our bike. I learned if I planned, I could eat “safely” and pedal on without being sidelined by allergies.

Allergies shouldn’t stop you from doing what you like to do. Follow the adage, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Get comfortable explaining your situation

Early on, I was not upfront in explaining my situation. I have allergy/sensitivity to dairy, gluten, eggs, yeast and nuts. I thought if I asked too many questions at restaurants, I would come across as a picky eater. I got sick many times as the result.

Traveling

My husband and I travel through small towns on our bike journeys. We discovered that “mom and pop”-type eateries are the best bet because they are more willing to work with you versus chain restaurants that have set menu. We’ve met many an empathetic waitress who listened and helped come up with an allergen-free meal at a fair price.

Hotel/motel rooms, equipped with kitchenettes or a microwave/mini-fridge, are an “oasis” while traveling. You can get ingredients at the grocery store and whip up a meal. I pack along a few utensils and a microwave-safe container.

When we cycle long distances, I put a small, insulated, ice-filled lunch sack in my bike bag. It keeps hemp milk, or other foods, cold.

I always try to locate co-op-type markets. They usually have food items for people with dietary issues. The internet can yield a wealth of information about potential eateries and their menus.

“Stay-cations”

You don’t have to travel to have summer fun. We like to pack a picnic and head to the lake, park or river on our bikes. I can pack whatever I want without having to worry.

My husband learned long ago that he can’t give me chocolates or cupcakes for special occasions. Instead, we focus on doing special activities, like touring Hawaii on our fold-up bicycles. The most important thing is to make summer memories.
