Hemp seed is perhaps the purest, most nutritionally dense food on the planet and is not only great for humans but our pets too! Dogs, birds, horses, chickens and livestock benefit from the essential fatty acids (EFA’s) contained in hemp.  Many animals are deficient in EFA’s therefore adding hemp seed oil and/or protein has a remarkable effect on healing dry itchy skin and dull coats. Research suggests that “adding hemp seed to your animals’ diet has a remarkable effect on many other conditions such as inflammation, cardiovascular function, organ function, immunity levels and muscle recovery.” This super food helped our Golden Retriever, Max, recover from a severe skin allergy.

About four years ago, Max began to get minor skin rashes, which eventually spread creating infected bald spots on his entire body.  Max was terribly uncomfortable which made our heart’s just break.  Therefore, we immediately changed Max’s diet following the guidance of Dr. Pitcairn. Dr. Pitcairn’s book, “Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats” provides a wealth of holistic health care information for your pet.

We changed Max’s diet to a simple hypo-allergenic vegetarian diet. This also meant taking wheat, soy & corn based fillers out of Max’s diet. Within a few months, Max’s rashes began to disappear and he became more comfortable. Then, we began adding hemp oil to his food; one tablespoon during meal times.  We all know that doggies need snacks so for his afternoon snack, Max gets a 4 oz serving of organic vanilla yogurt with 2 heaping tablespoons of tempts original hemp protein powder. He just loves it. Hemp seed keeps Max’s coat soft and silky.

Max will be eight years old this year and weighs a healthy 110 lbs. He is such a happy, energetic, playful and immensely loved pet!
