I specialize in diagnosing food allergies, intolerances and the associated symptoms, including irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive problems.  More and more, I’m meeting patients who have adverse reactions to dairy, egg, and even soy; they’re in need of alternatives and are looking for products that will fit into their new diet.

Generally speaking, the majority of dairy-free food alternatives are soy-based.  Soy protein powder is a great example of a vegetarian source of protein that’s widely used and available as a supplement. However, people with allergies to dairy, egg and soy cannot use soy protein powder, even though it is generally seen as the primary alternative to dairy and egg protein powders. Many other dairy free alternatives for milk, cheese, butter, and yogurt are typically soy-based too. As you might imagine, this can be very challenging and frustrating for patients.

Fortunately, they still have a healthy alternative in the form of hemp based products.  I recommend hemp without hesitation and always point out the hemp based milk options to my patients. Hemp has a very good protein and fat profile, and most people tolerate it quite well. Many people have been pleasantly surprised with their new discovery, and most never miss cow’s milk. This is especially true when they discover how much better they feel when they are avoiding their food allergens!
