Fall means back to school, and in my house, back to school means fall sports. If you have a teenage boy in the house, you know they eat a lot. If that same teenager plays sports, keeping up with the need for extra calories can be a challenge – especially if there are foods he needs to avoid due to allergies.
Now that my son is in college and playing water polo, he takes training very seriously – it’s about practice and skill, but it’s also about being in the best possible physical condition. In his case that means lifting weights, gaining a few pounds, and adding high quality protein to his diet.
Water polo is the most physically demanding sport I have seen. Speed in the water matters. Strength matters. During pre-season training my son’s team practices twice a day in the pool. One session is swim training (laps, sprints, speed training), while the second session is water polo practice (running drills and plays in preparation for game play). In between they lift weights.
Lots of calories are burned. Most players lose weight during the season, even if they are eating four or more meals a day. To help meet his higher calorie needs and to ensure high quality calories, my son likes to add protein shakes.
Most of the protein shakes available on the market have milk (whey or casein) or soy ingredients, so my son relies on hemp protein powder. He makes himself a very simple shake, combining protein with hemp milk, after his weight training session for the day.
Living Harvest’s Protein Powders are the best we have found on the market. Better still, Living Harvest’s Original powder has 13g of protein per serving (which is important for building muscle mass), and contains a high dose of potassium (to help avoid cramping). Here’s my son’s recipe for his favorite protein shake:
- 10 ounces of vanilla hemp milk
- About 3 tbsp of protein powder
- 1 tbsp creamy sunflower seed butter
Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and you’ve got a fabulous smooth and creamy drink packed with nutrition.
Even if your kids aren’t athletes, protein shakes can make a great snack. Try mixing the Living Harvest original protein powder with chocolate hemp milk, or the vanilla spice with vanilla hemp milk for a great mid-afternoon pick-me-up!
