There’s nothing like a great cup of warm hot chocolate. Even though it’s been a mild winter so far, there are days when the temperature suddenly drops twenty degrees and the wind picks up. Or the kids come home from school and bring a blast of cold air with them. And chances are, sooner or later, we will get that snowstorm.

That’s when you need a great cup of hot cocoa. It not only warms the body, but I happen to believe it warms the soul. After all, who can be grumpy after such a great treat?

If you’re allergic to dairy, most packaged hot cocoa mixes are not an option. My version of hot cocoa is dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and nut-free, and tastes just as good as the hot cocoa I remember as a child. It’s simple, satisfying, and with omega EFA’s, calcium, and vitamins – it’s  good for your body too!

Hemp Hot Cocoa

For each cup of cocoa use:

  • 1 cup Tempt hemp milk
  • ¼ cup Enjoy Life chocolate chips
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Heat the hemp milk and vanilla in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, to a low boil. Add the chocolate chips, and stir constantly until they are melted. Serve with a marshmallow.

I use Tempt original hemp milk, but any variety can be used. If you choose vanilla or chocolate, leave out the added vanilla extract. I selected Enjoy Life chocolate chips because they are made in a dedicated facility, free of the top eight allergens. If you add the marshmallow, make sure you check the ingredients to ensure that it’s allergen-free as well.

Enjoy!
